The freestanding jib cranes are engineered to function freestanding on a concrete foundation without the need for building support. It comes in three basic design styles, which are base plate mounted, foundation mounted, or sleeve insert mounted and can allow up to a 360o rotation. The standard capacities these designs are able to lift, lower and transfer are ½ up to 5 tons, generally, but they can also be specially made for larger ton capacity work with a possibility of up 15 tons.
Base Plated Mounted Jib Cranes are generally designed with a hexagonal base plate that is reinforced with six knee braces, equally spaced around the circumference of the mast. Typically, the base plate assembly is secured by anchor bolts to a reinforced concrete foundation, with the number of anchor bolts varying, depending on the capacity of the crane. These six bolts are used for columns that are less than 16″ in diameter and 12 bolts for columns 16″ in diameter and greater.
Foundation Mounted Jib Cranes utilizes a square steel plate, which is welded to the bottom of the column. The plate positions and levels the mast by anchoring it to the concrete footing. Then the second course of the concrete foundation, which will reinforce concrete to support the mast. This will make complete use of the work floor space and can be used in applying concrete where a base plate would be able to support floor activity.
Sleeve Insert Mounted Jib Cranes has a square steel plate which is welded to the bottom of the sleeve. This allows the mast to be relocated. The plate positions and levels the sleeve by anchoring it into the first application of concrete footing. The second course of a foundation is applied to reinforce the concrete supports to the sleeve. The mast is then placed into the sleeve where it is leveled by wedges and welded in place. Sleeve insert mounted cranes generally have the capability to cover a wide span in a work area and can handle floor activity very well.
Freestanding Jib Cranes Design
The freestanding jib cranes design, indoor/outdoor usability, and capability for up to 15-ton capacities of lifting, lowering and transferring materials and objects, makes it one of the most versatile cranes in jib crane designs. The jib crane will also, allows for electrified, motor driven, powered rotation through many collector ring assemblies. The boom or I-beam are designed to meet all specifications utilizing a low percentage of impact for hoist and trolley weight. The pipe mast or column is engineered to give the highest level of strength and minimum deflection to avoid bending, buckling, and crushing as well as the capability of becoming worn by the trunnion roller assembly. The top bearing assembly utilizes a tapered roller bearing provided with a grease fitting for proper lubrication. The bearings are designed for a 5000 hour + design life.
Conclusion
The freestanding jib cranes are more economical and some benefits to using the crane are independent head assembly installs separately for ease of installation. Also, the full supporting triangular base plates are used instead of struts to reduce the crane’s deflection and make steadying the loads easier.
